As a renewable energy producer and developer, we strive to be a leader in sustainable development while managing a commercially successful business.

The renewable power we generate produces exceptionally low greenhouse gas emissions and helps to reduce the impact of climate change. Our power generation facilities play a positive economic role as well by creating economic opportunities for individuals and communities.

We take a holistic approach to sustainability, which means we consider both the social and environmental impacts of our operations. We seek to protect and enhance the ecosystems affected by our activities and contribute positively to the communities in which we work, live and manage our operations. This commitment is integrated into our operations, management systems and performance metrics.

We are committed to understanding, minimizing, and managing the potential environmental impacts and safety hazards associated with our operations and activities. Our environmental principles are based on accountability, partnership and open communication. We accept the responsibility of managing natural resources in ways that ensure their long-term sustainability. Our goal is to protect and enhance the ecosystems and communities that surround us while delivering value to our customers and shareholders.

Ecologo® Program
EcoLogo® is the largest, most respected environmental standard and certification mark in North America and continues to gain recognition worldwide. Products and services bearing the EcoLogo® meet stringent standards of environmental leadership. Brookfield Renewable Partners has 23 hydroelectric facilities in British Columbia, Ontario, Québec and Louisiana that meet the requirements of the Ecologo® Program.
Low Impact Hydropower Institute Certification
The Low Impact Hydropower Institute (LIHI) is a non-profit organization dedicated to reducing the impacts of hydropower generation. It provides certification to hydropower projects that have eliminated or reduced their environmental impact pursuant to LIHI’s criteria. 54 hydro facilities owned by Brookfield Renewable in the United States have attained LIHI certification, more than any other hydropower producer.

Health and Safety

A well-trained workforce possesses the skills, confidence and motivation to operate in a safe and environmentally responsible manner. We strive to be an industry leader in accident prevention, and our goal is to incur zero high-risk safety incidents or lost-time injuries. A strong health and safety culture is critical to the success of our operations. We maintain a robust health and safety program with annual targets, objectives and structured action plans.

Community Involvement

We operate hydroelectric facilities across 82 river systems in North America, South America and Europe, and work continuously to earn credibility and trust among our local stakeholders. The relationships we form with local communities are critical to our success. They underpin our reputation as a leading renewable energy company and demonstrate that our commitment to our business and the facilities we operate is long-term.

We partner with a variety of local organizations to fund initiatives focused on five priority areas: mitigating environmental impact, conservation and preservation, support of river and watershed committees, support for economic development, and education and research.
