Please be advised that high-water conditions have washed away normal warning devices (buoys) at Safe Harbor & Holtwood Dam.

Once conditions return to normal and it is safe to do so, the warning devices will be re-installed.

Please use additional caution when on the river. Pay attention to your surroundings and respect all signage.

Also, due to these conditions, the flashboards at Holtwood Dam were washed away. As a result, please expect low water levels until replacement work can take place.

The Holtwood plant has been generating electricity since 1910, using the power of the water held back by a 55-foot-high dam across the Susquehanna River between Lancaster and York counties.

In 2013, Holtwood completed a new, 125-megawatt powerhouse, more than doubling its generating capacity.

The multi-year project created more than 300 construction jobs. Crews excavated more than 1.3 million cubic yards of rock, poured more than 71,000 cubic yards of concrete, dealt with the challenge of major tropical storms and took care to minimize disruption to wildlife in the area.
