UK Hydro
In August 2017, Brookfield completed the acquisition of a 25% stake in First Hydro, the UK's largest pumped storage asset. First Hydro manages and operates 2.1 GW of pumped storage facilities at the Dinorwig and Ffestiniog power stations in the Snowdonia region of Wales and represents 75% of the UK's pumped storage capacity and 50% of its hydro capacity. With the UK facing tightening supply margins, First Hydro provides an opportunity to invest in facilities providing critical back-up power and grid stabilization services.
Brookfield identified a unique opportunity to acquire Bord Gáis Energy’s Irish wind business, a 321 MW portfolio of high-quality operating wind assets, a 300 MW development pipeline, and an experienced team with full operating, development, commercial and financial expertise. The acquisition established Brookfield Renewable’s first operating platform outside the Americas and provided a scalable base for further European expansion. Since completing the acquisition in June 2014, we have built out the business by investing in people and processes, commissioned 170 MW of operational capacity, completed a number of tuck-in acquisitions and continued to expand our greenfield development pipeline across the island of Ireland.

In early 2015, Brookfield identified a 123 MW operating wind portfolio in Portugal, providing the opportunity to make an attractive investment into an established portfolio of wind assets. The sites, located in north and western Portugal have top-tier technology from global manufacturers and strong wind resource supported by a robust operating history. Portugal offers a significant renewables market with stable policies and a steadily improving economic environment. Marking the second acquisition for our European renewable business, the portfolio has since been fully integrated with our existing platform.
